Welcome to Fall!
The weather is starting to slowly cool down and leaves are making their way to the ground. It’s time for fall festivals, pumpkins, and long cool walks through the woods and in parks. If you are anything like me, this is the perfect time of year to visit the dog park where your dog can run free in a fenced in area. It’s also time to keep safety in the forefront of your thoughts.
My dog park has two play areas. One for large dogs, where they can run unleashed in a larger setting and the other for smaller dogs. Even though I can let my dog run free inside the gated area, I choose to keep her on the leash so I can get to her quickly in the event she is cornered by an aggressive dog. I have a beautiful, Bichon Frise (Beaujolais) who lives a pampered life and she doesn’t always understand when other dogs are trying to play with her. She tends to back away and that can sometimes egg on another more friendlier dog who is looking for a playmate. It’s important to know your dog’s personality and be ready to jump in at any moment.
Here are a few other tips to keep your pet safe during a dog park visit.
- Make sure your pet has access to water (especially in the hot weather.)
- Bring your dogs favorite treat along, you never know when it may come in handy.
- Never, ever leave your pet alone in a car – especially with the windows rolled up.
- Make sure your pet is on a leash.
- Bring your own poop bags along, if your park does not provide them.
- Leave the park if there is an unruly or unattended dog.
Enjoy and be safe!
